I have hardly worked in the studio lately. It has been months since I finished my last quilt. Yet, the way time is passing by, something tells me I am extremely busy. I better sit down and really think about where it really goes. </p><p>Here is the last Kawandi I finished early this year. This one started out as wanting to take a break from my usual palette of colors and needing to work with texture. The choices of fabrics were random because I always want to achieve that scrappy feeling in my quilt. I do have lots of fabric in my stash and I could spend hours curating fabrics for a new quilt. Sadly, most of the time would go into pulling out fabrics and then refolding and putting them back again. </p><p>Who wants to do that? <br /></p><p>So I pulled whatever was in front of me and got it going. Initially I thought I was going to mix solids and prints. <br /></p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_M9UpM5nhr1GklE_X18UkpmIIIfgy40mXTKIG_R11Jmo68vYa3fCPjYz7qSB31umzUotAQfqBFZTysyIAt5H4P55AFCJH6dGE-8lnj_LZ7q0_Gyw-c8uWr5BlTa5UeGut9WZvEArm4RP4B4EQClFYHY8mZRfs0IJX83nuQtQDnljIkGW4D7BK_VvIA/s4032/IMG_4614.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_M9UpM5nhr1GklE_X18UkpmIIIfgy40mXTKIG_R11Jmo68vYa3fCPjYz7qSB31umzUotAQfqBFZTysyIAt5H4P55AFCJH6dGE-8lnj_LZ7q0_Gyw-c8uWr5BlTa5UeGut9WZvEArm4RP4B4EQClFYHY8mZRfs0IJX83nuQtQDnljIkGW4D7BK_VvIA/w300-h400/IMG_4614.HEIC" width="300" /></a></div></div> <p></p><p>But once I started stitching the patches on top, creating contrast with prints alone made more sense. So I added small prints, large prints and everything in between. Some of the fabrics were really easy to stitch through and some were quite thick as I was using shirts and dresses from the goodwill store just because I like some of those prints. After all these years of quilting, I still see some fabrics show up in multiple quilts and I can't seem to get rid of them. I must really love them!<br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRKclFM8sV9QSnMIe297XQkp95mDaE7HGT5MEFmN34gNjq0XOeadNS8tBg4FS70Bul8NeM5mIrWN42lpSfjbHAKuUDV1ItzCJTiYbYeFSn24tk1bCIK1jtHYrU1ZlyzdX6qiaKeA9lf77XpRv2pOwkRi1GA1UXHZIF8FGeQyyl1j_8MpTtao7ThVATQ/s4032/IMG_4623.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDRKclFM8sV9QSnMIe297XQkp95mDaE7HGT5MEFmN34gNjq0XOeadNS8tBg4FS70Bul8NeM5mIrWN42lpSfjbHAKuUDV1ItzCJTiYbYeFSn24tk1bCIK1jtHYrU1ZlyzdX6qiaKeA9lf77XpRv2pOwkRi1GA1UXHZIF8FGeQyyl1j_8MpTtao7ThVATQ/w300-h400/IMG_4623.HEIC" width="300" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpBQyu9eYVS2_bi6YSHjfVEYcNzuAj0-9pbyN2bSCb0UkBkWhvhXpfs5wuadrW4lSGWzY8Dc4WjY5u2K3K49jtoh2hSoUHMW59TLOQGMFB2PXMXrZ6jFYvO64fq1fWS_CBzpjTGeRKRRPwadaPAlouQO3_42XFe-oteh_nwYfXz_11LI0I8GChpBXcAg/s4032/IMG_4684.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpBQyu9eYVS2_bi6YSHjfVEYcNzuAj0-9pbyN2bSCb0UkBkWhvhXpfs5wuadrW4lSGWzY8Dc4WjY5u2K3K49jtoh2hSoUHMW59TLOQGMFB2PXMXrZ6jFYvO64fq1fWS_CBzpjTGeRKRRPwadaPAlouQO3_42XFe-oteh_nwYfXz_11LI0I8GChpBXcAg/s320/IMG_4684.HEIC" width="240" /></a></div><p></p><p>Here is the shirt from the Goodwill store. It has mind of its own. I just put one scrap next to the previous one. Is it mindless sewing? I don't think so. If anything, it is pretty mindful. I am engaged in making decisions, enjoy every stitch and the way it evolves. <p></p><p>When it comes to those last stitches in the center, game time is on! I better be able to stuff all of that quilt in my left hand so I can stitch with the right. It somehow gets done. The last stitch is taken and for the first time I really can see it in its full glory. </p><p>A fascinating process that teaching me so many lessons of life itself. Being in the moment is the biggest one of them all. This one though, I think it told me to take a break from flowers for a while. </p><p>Sujata<br /> <br /></p>Sujata Shahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08342637667662268215noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2244865727892186735.post-90892918738211368222023-05-21T13:27:00.000-04:002023-05-21T13:27:01.805-04:00Back from Two Years of Hiatus<p><br /></p><p style="text-align: left;">They say you never can go back home. </p><p style="text-align: left;">I wonder if that is what this is. In my mind, I know that isn't what I am trying to do. Having moved so many times, I have managed to keep the best of the best memories and friends in my heart. having said that, I have certainly let my joy of writing go by the sideways for a while. So, once again, here is an attempt to keep these conversations alive. Two years of absence is a long time. It took me a while to even figure out how to figure out starting a new post. </p><p style="text-align: left;">There have been tons of ups and downs just like everyone else here and around me have gone through. I welcome them all when I am in the right state of mind. The only thing I have managed to to is continue to stitch, teach and live, which I am thankful for. </p><p style="text-align: left;">Post cancer life has been a slow recovery. Continue to live with all the possible normalcy has been a challenge but at the same time, if I didn't do that, I would be writing here a very sad story. I rather share the quilting journey as I have done before. </p><p style="text-align: left;">More importantly, I have come to realize that keeping the journal of my daily, weekly life as an artist is more important here than anywhere else. Slow stitching has become a daily practice, a way of my life. I start other pieced quilts but halfway loose interest and return to stitching. There is something so meditative about this process, it provides me the fuel I need to go through the days. </p><p style="text-align: left;">Here are some of the pictures of past few months in next few posts. Hope it springs me back to designing and making quilts. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm2iSJ2Dy3Raj424A8bneQr_CQexpt2A-IS0lKdGuF3pERHU9A1m5P21PFJpspC9N3gi9_rXCN1U6EJlfUtH5SaPQKiaUf-O7-hwOIWIlUgFuFCEKZn_2sPYLwDVv9E_5tpzkoaf-DjDnRsitc1_ehmnBDWXes0Lw4Af5gZwVXHC2K8yhQxQrjA4A3EQ/s4032/IMG_5669.HEIC" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; But I am happy to be sharing any information I can here about the quilting in India. </p><p>There are two online events coming up within a week or so. I highly recommend that you sign up for both. That is if you are into any kind of hand quilting and hand stitching. </p><p>The first event is about the Kantha Revival in Easter India and Bangladesh. What we know as quilter is kantha stitching but most have very little info on what an actual Kantha quilt is. This is a really good opportunity to view the film and join the conversation. <br /></p><p><a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kantha-in-bangladesh-from-hidden-corners-to-public-view-registration-140441196399#">Kantha of Bangladesh</a> Tickets- $5-10<br /></p><p><a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kantha-in-bangladesh-from-hidden-corners-to-public-view-registration-140441196399#">https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kantha-in-bangladesh-from-hidden-corners-to-public-view-registration-140441196399#</a></p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ceebc7c5691d500017cd497/1611783920176-SYHITR7B1DF70ZIR3KOO/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kFyD7pzB8zoMIVY5aiUuFlp7gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUqMSsMWxHk725yiiHCCLfrh8O1z4YTzHvnKhyp6Da-NYroOW3ZGjoBKy3azqku80C789l0jG2lbcDYBOeMi4OFSYem8DMb5PTLoEDdB05UqhYu-xbnSznFxIRsaAU-3g5IaylIg/20150203-_DSC7788.jpg?format=1000w" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="534" data-original-width="800" height="214" src="https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5ceebc7c5691d500017cd497/1611783920176-SYHITR7B1DF70ZIR3KOO/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kFyD7pzB8zoMIVY5aiUuFlp7gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUqMSsMWxHk725yiiHCCLfrh8O1z4YTzHvnKhyp6Da-NYroOW3ZGjoBKy3azqku80C789l0jG2lbcDYBOeMi4OFSYem8DMb5PTLoEDdB05UqhYu-xbnSznFxIRsaAU-3g5IaylIg/20150203-_DSC7788.jpg?format=1000w" width="320" /></a></div><p></p><span style="color: #3d85c6;"></span><p><br /></p><p>Here is another event of Siddi Quilts of India. I was at my niece' house in Seattle and walking down the stairs. I had just received an email from Gwen informing me that someone name Kris will contact me and if she asked to teach, I should grab that opportunity. </p><p>That very afternoon, I heard from Kris Cornell of Quilted Strait. The email said, Gwen who had been teaching at Quilted Strait was going to retire and she had suggested my name to be filling the spot to teach at that shop. I remember becoming a puddle with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. <br /></p><p>I picked up the phone and called Gwen in an instance. I knew then and know now, I could never fill her spot and do what she did. But I did end up teaching at Quilted Strait for a couple of times. <br />
Hi friends!<br />
<br />
Last week I went to Alex Anderson's home for the taping of the Quilt Show! You know, nothing ever happens overnight and there is always a story behind any event in life.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSFTd_m9SWEb5AVZF8-MYSEXyKpQRUOrMtS5Hg7E-0hKOk_OSn48z0EfsQnXQQF3jZhpv6wCEh2t0tr39opCvyvaqD64xGcyQ1cYllATZABX78bDSXvNfixYUd4lWK_p6gZDPwLAF9rHlK/s1600/The+Quilts.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSFTd_m9SWEb5AVZF8-MYSEXyKpQRUOrMtS5Hg7E-0hKOk_OSn48z0EfsQnXQQF3jZhpv6wCEh2t0tr39opCvyvaqD64xGcyQ1cYllATZABX78bDSXvNfixYUd4lWK_p6gZDPwLAF9rHlK/s400/The+Quilts.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So here is the story.<br />
<br />
I was scheduled to tape a show last year but as you all know, that wasn't meant to be. Sometimes what doesn't materialize turns out to be the best thing ever because life always has a way of turning things around for you when you are not looking.<br />
<br />
Early this year, soon after I returned from India, we all went in to stay-at-home order. With a complete shut down, I knew for sure there wasn't going to be any taping of the show in 2020 either. <br />
<br />
I was wrong. As the restrictions lifted to certain extent, The Quilt Show decided to tape the shows at two different locations. With keeping all social distancing guidelines in mind, Alex Anderson opened up her home to tape few shows with local artists in the area and I was one of them.<br />
<br />
It was a fun day for sure. I was little nervous about choosing the right quilts that would convey my story and the demos that would be right for the time frame we were given.<br />
<br />
The day of the taping approached faster than I thought. Just a couple of days before the show, I got a call from Alex, (who is also in my quilt group) telling me that she and her husband got tested for Covid-19 and both had tested negative. I couldn't be happier. Knowing that, and the fact that I do not go anywhere, I felt safe for the taping of the show. <br />
<br />
The Quilt Show crew was great to work with. Although, I must say, if I ever were to run into them on the street, I wouldn't recognize them at all as their faces were covered with the masks during the entire session.<br />
<br />
If there is anything I would change about the day, I would wear a mask not just before but also during the taping of the show.
Alex and I both discussed in length over this past weekend. We both agreed, the times we are living
in, it is crucial to convey the importance of wearing a mask ourselves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUUJ-SZdoJXiY_m-E4j99WRrkCjHgBL9osU5n0PuJqCpNywbeANWIohRIeSa8Yg3TfeZzIdzRO4H1psNYyYq5IjJxm1vc5TRXSsBSLJkvS7w9VDcx4BR5d5bZcNWYjN0oUIn9vqlRrKfjX/s1600/Under+the+Tent.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUUJ-SZdoJXiY_m-E4j99WRrkCjHgBL9osU5n0PuJqCpNywbeANWIohRIeSa8Yg3TfeZzIdzRO4H1psNYyYq5IjJxm1vc5TRXSsBSLJkvS7w9VDcx4BR5d5bZcNWYjN0oUIn9vqlRrKfjX/s400/Under+the+Tent.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Here we are, under the tent in Alex's backyard. Freddy Moran had just called Alex and I was talking with her in this moment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinAmNcEcnMWxcAPipO50730d87EcTAI6PvEOAxhy1ZMUr5ZHeNXanWELFM1O5wtQMskpsPbTNilOVQgZEm4JPqc9SITbwGOt1ZatKuzsp28I4PKq7ksHYvipfD07q3FDvdX2Ay5wfg55Jf/s1600/The+Cameramen.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinAmNcEcnMWxcAPipO50730d87EcTAI6PvEOAxhy1ZMUr5ZHeNXanWELFM1O5wtQMskpsPbTNilOVQgZEm4JPqc9SITbwGOt1ZatKuzsp28I4PKq7ksHYvipfD07q3FDvdX2Ay5wfg55Jf/s400/The+Cameramen.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Here are two nicest cameramen setting up the room for shooting. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

They all were wearing the funniest smiling masks. I could tell they were really smiling from their eyes.<br />
<br />

Producer Shelly explaining the step by step instructions to me. This all was so new to me, I was listening to every single word.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDZrrTAYNSfVJyyozlZi31h0ghwXsojD78iggn5KHS4BOfeIVf6XfyjmSM_MTRXxdat8XTy5eK32rfaF7wW6QqeOfg56DkgykX_VBxNMl5KkQUCXZ0pcc-0noiO0O36eDhPulmUL6qo2ej/s1600/At+the+Demo+table.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDZrrTAYNSfVJyyozlZi31h0ghwXsojD78iggn5KHS4BOfeIVf6XfyjmSM_MTRXxdat8XTy5eK32rfaF7wW6QqeOfg56DkgykX_VBxNMl5KkQUCXZ0pcc-0noiO0O36eDhPulmUL6qo2ej/s320/At+the+Demo+table.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Here we are at the demo table. For the first time, I realized how much work goes into taping of an hour long show. They were all so professional and courteous! The best part of taping was, I never had to drive or fly out of the state.<br />
<br />
Alex doesn't know this but I had heard of her just as I was starting out as a quilter and now we are in the same quilt group. Life is full of full circle moments! It was a treat to meet her husband and work with her crew.<br />
<br />
I am not sure when the show will air but I think pretty soon. Stay tuned, I will keep you all posted.<br />

Can I pick up where I left off a little over a year back?<br />
<br />
Probably not. I did try though! Just a couple of weeks back I drafted a post about my past year but in this moment, it just feels like the personal storm that passed through and life has brought new challenges. Not just for me but the entire world. I look at it as a message to me - Just keep going, be better at living your life, be more aware, more compassionate and kind. <br />
<br />
Most importantly living in the moment, just this moment.<br />
<br />
So I have been doing just that, being in the moment and sewing away. Busy with my hands and my mind, stitching down everything that is going on in my life.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6S1wkIzX6xKrbo-NyPLsSaZK-vaehrKqgU8M0VWL_NEcCRFmECOTU5tFNGar8umN8RVRrzrcxl5Kj-7ABC02qpImMvj0kkTE7HrT3Mlmf0DiM1z99feVoZE7yrdQBFGR4-wMS4X8mSupQ/s1600/20200604_164634_HDR_Signature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6S1wkIzX6xKrbo-NyPLsSaZK-vaehrKqgU8M0VWL_NEcCRFmECOTU5tFNGar8umN8RVRrzrcxl5Kj-7ABC02qpImMvj0kkTE7HrT3Mlmf0DiM1z99feVoZE7yrdQBFGR4-wMS4X8mSupQ/s400/20200604_164634_HDR_Signature.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
It has been time for self evaluation - of my strengths as well as weaknesses. Working with little scraps has allowed me to be in the moment. Most of my fabrics are still in the garage. So I remain content with whatever I see right in front of me. Although the other day, I did bring out some "new" fabrics from the garage and added them to my basket.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
These few months of stay at home has allowed me to be good to my indoor plats. They have never looked so healthy! House plants are another thing that keeps me focused. Taking care of them, watching them grow has become a second nature since I was a little girl. My father taught me that and I am forever grateful for that. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I have loved watching this pothos one grow since last year. It used to live on the bathroom window until Kai pulled it down. Poor plant was shocked but with enough care and love it is back again! Well, that and the fact that it is very easy to grow plant. <br />

<br />
On a personal note - It has been quite a year but I can not complain. Having traveled to Toronto, Pennsylvania, Seattle and India in between cancer treatment and Covid 19 Stay at home order I feel pretty fortunate.<br />
<br />
I intend to hang on to that feeling.<br />
<br />
Have a good day you all!<br />

I started this quilt in October of 2018. I was hoping to gift this to my daughter Kavita as a Christmas present but as you can tell, it is still here.<br />
<br />
This quilt has gone through many changes. It evolved from a plain and simple Kawandi quilt to what it is right now.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Winds of Change 23" X 41"</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I made the background from pale fabrics because I wanted to challenge myself with light and soft shades. Well that did not work out as a quilt in itself but they worked very well as a background.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
I used every shade of red plaid I had in my stash to make the "table" for the pot of flowers.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
They were layered and stitched like a Kawandi quilt. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The pot was little difficult to stitch because that grey fabric is a piece of my pants. I machine pieced the rectangle pot and then hand stitched on the background. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivBgj3ZLhUpmifr2r8S7CVkqJRKegPsAvUc8nhh15WIy5-MCZ-rCZV2kj_S81dFaxuv3IU8I8NiRuVxvCgcmWwwi_tLI01HhMlEipbjYjb1h__aIJTneIvcnM4hilk8e6LKYJ_fYOw8Ehk/s1600/20190513_153926_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivBgj3ZLhUpmifr2r8S7CVkqJRKegPsAvUc8nhh15WIy5-MCZ-rCZV2kj_S81dFaxuv3IU8I8NiRuVxvCgcmWwwi_tLI01HhMlEipbjYjb1h__aIJTneIvcnM4hilk8e6LKYJ_fYOw8Ehk/s640/20190513_153926_HDR.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I love the use of large prints for the applique. It makes it easier to have a great impact with simple and bold design. One piece applique takes out all the trouble of registration of patterns. Gwen used to say, "Folk art applique used to be simple and then they made it complicated." I love simple so here it is!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I did use the freezer paper to make sure the leaves fit the background. I also wanted an oversized, organic shapes. The only way to get that was to not worry about prints, patterns and where the branches and leaves end up on the back ground. Because it was spontaneous, it evolved throughout with every step of stitching. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdVBZM0gZzaEiewIJsByOHMvISw5BW6CFL94LKU8S7XdPF46i2KAHzMbQ-XbAHNIUWoIDZ2FXeJs6pj4cJ7ZiQavZ-OhEIjY6Ej5BCwv4H128Ohrb-n3BI8QIM2imRmmUVXORcfqCAotek/s1600/20190513_153917_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdVBZM0gZzaEiewIJsByOHMvISw5BW6CFL94LKU8S7XdPF46i2KAHzMbQ-XbAHNIUWoIDZ2FXeJs6pj4cJ7ZiQavZ-OhEIjY6Ej5BCwv4H128Ohrb-n3BI8QIM2imRmmUVXORcfqCAotek/s640/20190513_153917_HDR.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Last step was deciding the shape and color of the flower. My basic instinct was to go for red and teal blue solids. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTEEin_14WmSiSvcegopf6N9oxUWJIVCXaEtUupquDPQo7BQD_0zQP5WTDNJSgtQ3TSrJkTnB_b53Ek_6p9tnpmHdhIohxGvOAV91a4UdvN2zasKXm5TCf3p02kwIk8DpoFZUwD4p1_f_p/s1600/20190508_092808_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTEEin_14WmSiSvcegopf6N9oxUWJIVCXaEtUupquDPQo7BQD_0zQP5WTDNJSgtQ3TSrJkTnB_b53Ek_6p9tnpmHdhIohxGvOAV91a4UdvN2zasKXm5TCf3p02kwIk8DpoFZUwD4p1_f_p/s640/20190508_092808_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is what I had in mind but the fabrics were too thin and somehow for the first time in my life I thought, solids are not working. They were overpowering the entire quilt design. I chose blue and red prints in the end and changed the shape of the flower. I think the flower could have been the same as here but you learn as you go. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhRhTsL14TTbyEZj6tCjPZfCdJzl1kpwstXVwPd26_nEyUBevCYZFSsX9jpXFULI2FjQUxIS0kC3rec1kwfhdU6iST_DKHK2lIW_n0WAh6e8E1Le-uvzLHm4GMIEyhmoUmvrTn_WoWr_BQ/s1600/20190510_121238_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhRhTsL14TTbyEZj6tCjPZfCdJzl1kpwstXVwPd26_nEyUBevCYZFSsX9jpXFULI2FjQUxIS0kC3rec1kwfhdU6iST_DKHK2lIW_n0WAh6e8E1Le-uvzLHm4GMIEyhmoUmvrTn_WoWr_BQ/s640/20190510_121238_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This was another option but somehow I decided to go with the flower. I added lots of extra stitching for the feeling of winds of change that is blowing through my life. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The quilt measures 23" X 41". It has layers of fabric as batting. It is stitched entirely by hand other than the construction for the pot. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGz8VY3C5b7lyPLrgD-YUlkyXPGpdFIMn_3tXQ-qGW2X1QnjGcB6K4CY5ZRE7HVGPjagE8EdFZFHeplAYO5D8ipkRxPm9hz0-XuNUFApMDFc7kriwDu9b1_QNQ6h6Sy0fiUvROVX3JuZZ2/s1600/20190513_153906_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="967" data-original-width="1600" height="386" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGz8VY3C5b7lyPLrgD-YUlkyXPGpdFIMn_3tXQ-qGW2X1QnjGcB6K4CY5ZRE7HVGPjagE8EdFZFHeplAYO5D8ipkRxPm9hz0-XuNUFApMDFc7kriwDu9b1_QNQ6h6Sy0fiUvROVX3JuZZ2/s640/20190513_153906_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I will continue adding the "wind" for a while until it all settles down. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I am also adding this quilt as a workshop sample for future workshops and retreats. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I hope you all had a wonderful Mother's Day weekend and have a great week!</div>

Have you been wondering where did I disappear?<br />
<br />
I was hoping to post all the pictures from both, Santa Cruz and San Francisco shows. Write about my wonderful experience with all the people I got to interact. All I can say is, the shows were a fantastic way to mark over four years period of publishing the book and traveling as a quilt teacher.<br />
<br />
This is the latest quilt I finished just before the show in San Francisco. I have not made many quilts with pink fabrics but for some reason here it is!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiViLlQYikEp8lYw3K-ghf3b9qcwi8Qv7jucwxurgVHJMcHVNzlMjrZkyzAHK7XVhilivEsVG4VAwuWxZy64Hj-VB7azu1QjnwI23rLB-HP_rKI_ZFM16dR5-olyRGeY-HLH_hH3TdsXtMA/s1600/20190328_082232_HDR%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1546" data-original-width="1600" height="616" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiViLlQYikEp8lYw3K-ghf3b9qcwi8Qv7jucwxurgVHJMcHVNzlMjrZkyzAHK7XVhilivEsVG4VAwuWxZy64Hj-VB7azu1QjnwI23rLB-HP_rKI_ZFM16dR5-olyRGeY-HLH_hH3TdsXtMA/s640/20190328_082232_HDR%257E2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My all organic pink quilt! It has bits and pieces from previous projects but also has pieces of my skirt from 1992 and my husband's shirt that also was used in Primary Colors Quilt. All organically cut with scissors and hand quilted! <br />
<br />
When I was posting process pictures of this quilt on instagram, I would tag it as #pinkisnotmycolor but that was about to change.<br />
<br />
On the morning of Tuesday, March 19th, I had all my quilts out for selection for the Q_U_I_L_T San Francisco show. I was busy picking and choosing but at some point I decided to take a break from it and shower instead. <br />
<br />
While I was taking a shower, I found a lump in my breast.<br />
<br />
"No, it can't be!" I just had a mammogram!<br />
<br />
At first I thought I imagined it. I tried to feel it couple of times and then rushed out of the shower. I got dressed but that fear had already made a home in my mind.<br />
<br />
I kept working but I could not stop thinking about that lump and feeling it. My hand would just reach in to confirm what I now already knew as a fact. I guess I was hoping over and over that it wasn't true. <br />
<br />
I had a show to hang on Thursday, 21st March. I thought for the time being I will put it aside. Keep working and make the appointment on Monday after the show.<br />
<br />
Next three hours, I found myself just focused on that lump than anything else. I even went back in the bathroom, undressed to check if it was a mistake.<br />
<br />
It was not a mistake!<br />
<br />
I called the doctor's office to make an appointment. I continued packing my quilts in bags making sure that everything I needed for the show was in right order.<br />
<br />
The next day, after a physical and a mammogram I came home expecting a call for an ultrasound.<br />
<br />
I remember feeling exhausted after the appointment. They were nice to take me in so quickly but surprisingly enough, the doctor thought both my breasts were the same and there was nothing abnormal. I asked, "Don't you feel the lump?" I had to hold her hand and put her finger on the lump so she would feel it. She ordered the mammogram, told me not to worry, "Not every lump ends up being cancer." I came home and crashed on the couch. It wasn't even half an hour, I got a phone call to get an ultrasound done. I made the appointment for Monday, 25th March. <br />
<br />
For next three days, I boxed away all my worries and concerns and had a really great time at the show. It was just lovely to be able to talk about my quilts and their stories. The whole time I was thinking, "What a great way to end this journey as a traveling teacher if that is what it will be!" <br />
<br />
On Monday, 25th March, my husband and I went to the hospital for the ultrasound which obviously followed by a core biopsy. We both came back home, again with - "Don't worry, not every lump is cancer. It will be okay. Someone will call you with the results in 3 to 5 days."<br />
<br />
Somehow those words were meaningless to me. Deep down in my gut I knew.<br />
<br />
The next day around noon I received a phone call. Not 3-5 days... the very next day.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">"You have breast cancer."</span><br />
<br />
Four words and my life changed! <br />
<br />
It is important to me to share my experience with all of you, my friends who are scattered all over the globe. <br />
<br />
I had my routine mammogram early this year on 30 January 2019.<br />
<br />
The result of that mammogram was negative.<br />
<br />
Exactly six weeks after that I found a lump.<br />
<br />
I am thankful for the day I found it. I have a long road ahead of me but I am going to be fine. Thankfully, it is a stage one cancer. <br />
<br />
So the reason for the title of this post? <br />
<br />
HAVE YOU?<br />
<br />
HAVE YOU had your mammogram in past year?<br />
<br />
HAVE YOU done a self breast exam in past month?<br />
<br />
HAVE YOU put your health on the back burner for whatever reason?<br />
<br />
Life changes in a flash. <br />
<br />
After I shared my news, I have already heard from women in my family and friends who do not do a self exam. They will now. <br />
<br />
All you have to do is close your eyes and feel your breasts as if your life depends on it. IT DOES!<br />
<br />
This pink quilt is now my healing quilt. <br />
<br />
I will be carrying it with me to every chemo treatment and cuddle under whenever I feel like it. Yes! pink is my new favorite color! <br />
<br />
Today I am a breast cancer patient and in six months I will be a breast cancer survivor. <br />
<br />
Make that appointment. Don't just stop there. Do your life good by following through at home.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

I had to put the uandu quilt to the side for a short while. A lot is going on right now and there are only so many hours in the day. <br />
<br />
I am going to be the featured artist at PVQA annual quilt show this weekend. Past couple of weeks I have been busy sewing hanging sleeves on my quilts that has never been hung before. Those are some very large quilts so you can imagine the time it has taken to make them show ready.<br />
<br />
Today I am grouping them as they will hang in the show to make it easier on the the volunteers who are working there.<br />
<br />
It is even nice to see them hanging side by side in my house on this bedroom where light is always bright.<br />

<br />
I also have some Ralli and Siddi quilts from India made with old saris and other scraps. Most of the quilts I have are two sided quilts as they are when you make do. It was hard to decide on which side to attach the sleeves on. If they were visible from both side, I would have taken a different approach but only one side is going to be seen. I thought I would post here both side of this particular quilt so you can all see the quilt.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
I am calling this the front side since the other side ended up with a sleeve.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp1-UQZ2MCAcxSVdgzHcfmxX-_rv8tJJdJhiTeCL_kxjsEw4Z-VKrk1sAak6_Ye4A_7p_pPJi6iNWJ0QMK77hGNb9pEH2IhROOTBDaHID31SGmPNRlAIl39wFfRA6Xgogxkx-NE3MgM55I/s1600/20190220_083645_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp1-UQZ2MCAcxSVdgzHcfmxX-_rv8tJJdJhiTeCL_kxjsEw4Z-VKrk1sAak6_Ye4A_7p_pPJi6iNWJ0QMK77hGNb9pEH2IhROOTBDaHID31SGmPNRlAIl39wFfRA6Xgogxkx-NE3MgM55I/s640/20190220_083645_HDR.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Wouldn't you agree the sleeve looks really tacky? I am going to remove it as soon as I get it back. This quilt weighs a lot with old clothes being used as "batting". I appreciate the old Indian ways of quilting and curious to use thinner fabric layers as batting in my next few quilts. <br />
<br />
Interesting observation of the day is that quilts in the first picture were made many moons ago. I bought this Siddi quilt last year. To see them all side by side in this blog post confirms my thoughts on how our mind works as artist. I can never take India out of my head. Although, it has been 33 years of living in the United States, I drift very easily between minimalism and maximal-ism when it comes to quilting and designing. One thing remains constant is the use of colors and textures of India in my quilts.<br />
<br />
Here are the close up pictures of Siddi Quilt.<br />

I have been stealing some time away from having to put sleeves on my quilts and making progress on my uanduqal blocks.<br />
<br />
When I made first few, I wasn't sure where this was going to go or if I will be able to stick with it. I don't usually do foundation piecing. I like to just cut my fabrics and sew but this is a different kind of quilts and it required the good old phone book, and lots of little pieces from shirts and few solids.<br />
<br />
Every morning I make a few and later in the evening when time permits, I have been trimming them. It has gone pretty well so far.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTW6-oJTIqN8xtgqf6eSNHyz13uhRbKGDIKQt9FSnEOoO_KVlwisj6M1ZM9naFJVb9Q85Lgwi9tE5WxFs0nCKI8iwFrivleZ7Nd-MD8o1JcXx3xMVngVq2b_KcARVt2ah92CP3w3IVrwix/s1600/20190129_135733_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTW6-oJTIqN8xtgqf6eSNHyz13uhRbKGDIKQt9FSnEOoO_KVlwisj6M1ZM9naFJVb9Q85Lgwi9tE5WxFs0nCKI8iwFrivleZ7Nd-MD8o1JcXx3xMVngVq2b_KcARVt2ah92CP3w3IVrwix/s640/20190129_135733_HDR.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
It took no time to fill this design wall up. I am working with 9"X 9" blocks so you can see how small this design wall is. It is good to see them on the wall though, it gave me an idea on which direction to go.<br />
<br />
It is mindless sewing but I am mindful about picking my colors and textures next to each other. Just because a quilt is scrappy, doesn't mean I let go of my need to design.<br />
<br />
Once I ran out of space, I decided to just have fun arranging them in a beehive pattern.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8fFH768THKvGj0-tUYZ2TWReL2zsjETh7hkEg8W01ruxGfllj3epHF0XnzAFDtxoZ3WZuUNceVHhvzwyjeQNAiFkZh8hY6BTq2bJAM0cwh82lRwnC7kNRPYkYIXaXsYeEcv1FLRSXX7ye/s1600/20190130_101029_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8fFH768THKvGj0-tUYZ2TWReL2zsjETh7hkEg8W01ruxGfllj3epHF0XnzAFDtxoZ3WZuUNceVHhvzwyjeQNAiFkZh8hY6BTq2bJAM0cwh82lRwnC7kNRPYkYIXaXsYeEcv1FLRSXX7ye/s640/20190130_101029_HDR.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Oh dear! There is another idea for a quilt! I am telling you I could devote this entire year for the quilts inspired from U and U! It is that good!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX7rgXw2KWAahlT-ynHjPtn66vhrlTcva0yxrwEbf-CSt3x_eQH60jvmTIMdhjYbM5owVPTHxsZASxJ9RJoIgjOSJ5JYLE5FuQcCFd1d9viQ4_xGv8Qdn35-P9chBTRYiIsRp0_gea0aHn/s1600/20190130_100705_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX7rgXw2KWAahlT-ynHjPtn66vhrlTcva0yxrwEbf-CSt3x_eQH60jvmTIMdhjYbM5owVPTHxsZASxJ9RJoIgjOSJ5JYLE5FuQcCFd1d9viQ4_xGv8Qdn35-P9chBTRYiIsRp0_gea0aHn/s640/20190130_100705_HDR.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
As you know, initially I had decided not to work with Y seams but it will be a great quilt if I can pull it off.<br />
<br />
For those of you, who might want to stay away from those painful seams, there is another way of working with squares.<br />
<br />
Isn't this exciting? The more I look at the pattern better it gets!<br />
<br />
So how would you avoid the Y seams?<br />
<br />
It's simple. Make your blocks square!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfuijl5uHGIe_BTCmv1B5_b51EeHolg4BFPgd5bhC_h2-pXdV9cbbL3ClyaKAJDcng5-EpCnDp_gU-mQvBXuIqUSSZ1te5MRscTDK67sfkMCyVRGZaoLTEsjiwUQ4ISdn4Uta8aBmJcNJF/s1600/20190131_093117_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfuijl5uHGIe_BTCmv1B5_b51EeHolg4BFPgd5bhC_h2-pXdV9cbbL3ClyaKAJDcng5-EpCnDp_gU-mQvBXuIqUSSZ1te5MRscTDK67sfkMCyVRGZaoLTEsjiwUQ4ISdn4Uta8aBmJcNJF/s640/20190131_093117_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is for a nine inch finished block. I would simply add setting triangles on either side. I cut mine at 5 inches and then cut once diagonally to finish the square. Yes, you will see that seam in the middle but if you use solid fabric it won't show after quilting and if you use prints, oh what better than add more texture to the quilt?<br />
<br />
Once your square blocks are done, you will simply use the diagonal setting and set the blocks on point to finish the quilt top. You will need setting triangles at the end to finish the edges.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_LsMTo3Net9goBESgYd2LnLag0066PzTRZhHRIqJsVpTRjneE4f0usVxah3p4ReKTc9Tk4I_YuNv1lOS2Fdcbsrx0xO4XfS0RVzC7vOpRcupa0hJNOGVjr7uwoczPg6SKK0twMcC36pSp/s1600/20190131_121823_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_LsMTo3Net9goBESgYd2LnLag0066PzTRZhHRIqJsVpTRjneE4f0usVxah3p4ReKTc9Tk4I_YuNv1lOS2Fdcbsrx0xO4XfS0RVzC7vOpRcupa0hJNOGVjr7uwoczPg6SKK0twMcC36pSp/s640/20190131_121823_HDR.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
How about that?<br />
<br />
So those of you who are struggling with quarter Square triangles not working, you can still use these blocks and make them look like continuous octagon shape.<br />
<br />
I have made a little stack here and I plan to continue.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I hope all of you who are in deep freeze weather are staying warm.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Overlapping Octagons</span><br />
<br />
It is all about "U"! Thank you all for getting as excited as I am about this project. So many of you have signed up for this QAL! I am excited to see so many versions of a quilt. <br />
<br />
The first quilt I picked screams both - Unconventional and Unexpected!<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Facts and my observation of this quilt: </span> <br />
Find it in your book, Unconventional and Unexpected Quilts on page 51. <br />
<br />
The maker is unknown and so is the pattern. I am going to call it Overlapping Octagons.<br />
Quilt in the book measures 77 X 66 inches.<br />
Finished blocks 8 X 8 inches<br />
Fabric used shirting and flannel <br />
<br />
I must say the maker was pretty clever! She made this simple pattern look quite complicated.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjydJ8pFQ0hjkZ7TqVK7DRtjQAn5C_xK1P44sR1QCyifgM7AshidLaSv3Hpqv2TwkhEZ8-52cWw4ojKTea-ILXSZ-AxLGQw82Gr4GuOxNKt0vreHa_4voqhfBDgKp4B_qr6u4sG5CmJCqju/s1600/20190107_000601_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="605" data-original-width="536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjydJ8pFQ0hjkZ7TqVK7DRtjQAn5C_xK1P44sR1QCyifgM7AshidLaSv3Hpqv2TwkhEZ8-52cWw4ojKTea-ILXSZ-AxLGQw82Gr4GuOxNKt0vreHa_4voqhfBDgKp4B_qr6u4sG5CmJCqju/s640/20190107_000601_HDR.jpg" width="566" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Our eyes are so trained to find a square block in a quilt.. I couldn't see one, can you?<br />
<br />
I looked closer to study the construction of the quilt and deconstructed the "Block".<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3eQiWriasxfJof5miWFeb5WSwyJ3XE1o6ENPQjC2KcdSZO8EgcKgwA4_ulsL-V_2XoCHDrAP79Wa0WBtBPXbhzYI-i4HSYVGg1cglw8S9zXKgvp2FbKa0U-gsDFA5AXuwemOXFgI8-UtT/s1600/20190105_132959_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="959" data-original-width="539" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3eQiWriasxfJof5miWFeb5WSwyJ3XE1o6ENPQjC2KcdSZO8EgcKgwA4_ulsL-V_2XoCHDrAP79Wa0WBtBPXbhzYI-i4HSYVGg1cglw8S9zXKgvp2FbKa0U-gsDFA5AXuwemOXFgI8-UtT/s640/20190105_132959_HDR.jpg" width="358" /></a></div>
<br />
I think this quilt was hand pieced. Two different units were used to make this quilt. A square for the center of each octagon and string pieces rectangles with triangles on either ends.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9L4lo1ByOMjqWsAn-HBfAPRi-fzC2KmGX_AT2kNDiq1QKmCFPYN6b1gdhi87IGRUnGcBaVMAWKs_DmYqYxT8BmNZWLpm6sE7I29FPTJ65AlLj8gXf-UyqmjhzuOHUuYfE1i9kGPggEzv6/s1600/20190106_225205_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="535" data-original-width="538" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9L4lo1ByOMjqWsAn-HBfAPRi-fzC2KmGX_AT2kNDiq1QKmCFPYN6b1gdhi87IGRUnGcBaVMAWKs_DmYqYxT8BmNZWLpm6sE7I29FPTJ65AlLj8gXf-UyqmjhzuOHUuYfE1i9kGPggEzv6/s320/20190106_225205_HDR.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Why do I think it was hand pieced? Those rectangles with triangles on either side are string pieced and some of the patches continue from the triangles to the body of the rectangle.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<br />
I am not sure about you all but I do not want to hand piece a quilt top at this time in my life.<br />
So here is what I came up with.<br />
<br />
The best way to sew these Overlapped Octagons is to sew them in columns using required units..<br />
<br />
Here are some loose instructions I promised.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNe9seCvD-Yll2Qzth8eXlI_pY757TccDK-e89X-zA4zZrRGzS7KPLQZJdXqftlARsV9J-jvRpLG6Eh6BPpy6kX8pZbSj1BCV0Y1aoED7Ji4mLDkRd_wbfqusRyblgz6DHL-PSGN2gk9Xk/s1600/20190106_225225_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="539" data-original-width="959" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNe9seCvD-Yll2Qzth8eXlI_pY757TccDK-e89X-zA4zZrRGzS7KPLQZJdXqftlARsV9J-jvRpLG6Eh6BPpy6kX8pZbSj1BCV0Y1aoED7Ji4mLDkRd_wbfqusRyblgz6DHL-PSGN2gk9Xk/s640/20190106_225225_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This quilt can be constructed with finished, <br />
<br />
2" Quarter Square Triangles<br />
2 X 4 inches String Pieced Rectangles<br />
4 X 4 Center Squares <br />
<br />
Are you with me? If not, I have more to say :)<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">You will construct it in columns. Yes! Strips!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidQ32v8Fnekcm5Znpe35UgcOvvQVdezRxVMhD89UL103ht3oKJJer9KHdhLL0bo0Qg5qRN08uLe2P-xzCgWl4gaX_nIJvH0m0wyv8yCdXT99uhExkm3agRzzBtFJqzWlq2AJYp8OD-l8pg/s1600/20190106_225236_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="959" data-original-width="539" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidQ32v8Fnekcm5Znpe35UgcOvvQVdezRxVMhD89UL103ht3oKJJer9KHdhLL0bo0Qg5qRN08uLe2P-xzCgWl4gaX_nIJvH0m0wyv8yCdXT99uhExkm3agRzzBtFJqzWlq2AJYp8OD-l8pg/s640/20190106_225236_HDR.jpg" width="358" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>You will need (give or take)</li>
</ul>
<br />
132 Center Squares - 4 1/2" X 4 1/2"<br />
<br />
156 Stringed Pieced Rectangles - 2 1/2" X 4 1/2"<br />
<br />
156 Quarter Square Triangles - 2 1/2" X 2 1/2"<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Strip Set - A </li>
</ul>
Sew 12 strips starting with quarter square triangle alternating with string pieced rectangle and ending with quarter square triangle - 74 1/2 " long. For each strip you will need 13 squares and 12 rectangles. <br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Strip Set -B</li>
</ul>
Sew 11 strips, Starting with stringed rectangle alternating with a plain center square, ending with pieced rectangle. For each strip you will need 13 Rectangles and 12 Squares. <br />
<br />
Sew strip one and two in alternating order.<br />
The quilt should measure 68" X 74" or something like that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoKaEWQlr_4s-JtokQV3fJBft4q0BXg15lYjRUQNuSU4l9vNOK4Crf0xDM02MhVLzyOjhwelBOowuMR-BDFC60xAUrnaAWfcI5w1Qx-LOCaYgywfwfJ2HE1p313uJaofunpLXh6oLgVC0W/s1600/20190106_230840_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoKaEWQlr_4s-JtokQV3fJBft4q0BXg15lYjRUQNuSU4l9vNOK4Crf0xDM02MhVLzyOjhwelBOowuMR-BDFC60xAUrnaAWfcI5w1Qx-LOCaYgywfwfJ2HE1p313uJaofunpLXh6oLgVC0W/s640/20190106_230840_HDR.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are few other things to consider.<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Use many shades of same color to mimic the use of recycled shirts.</li>
<li>Observe the size of the scraps and compare those to the prints you may be using. Large prints will definitely get lost when cut providing even crazier look!</li>
<li>You don't need to make entire quilt with small blocks. Play around with large scale prints and large size blocks. The blocks can be reconfigured as long as the measurements are divisible by 2 </li>
<li>What if you choose those 4" squares to act as background? How will those overlapping octagons act against same fabric throughout? </li>
<li>Consider low volume, high contrasts. "Take a trip" to another country for inspiration and use colors inspired from it.</li>
<li>Use your travel pictures for color inspiration.</li>
<li>Use stripes, dots pr plaids to create drama. </li>
</ul>
I can go on and on. <br />
<br />
If you are not interested in making this quilt, pick the one you like. There are so many beautiful quilts in the book, just have fun, make it your own.<br />
<br />
I am still trying to figure out the best way to have one platform to visit each-other's projects. Meanwhile, let's make some dent in the scrap box!<br />
<br />
If you are on Instagram, use #unconventionalandunexpected and #UANDUQAL <br />
I am told U&UQAL will not work.<br />
<br />
And lastly, you do not need to have a blog nor the IG account. I really hope you have fun making these quilts.<br />
<br />
Happy Monday you all! <br />

I hope your holidays were as bright and filled with love as ours. I am still here.. This house was filled with relatives from distance and kids.<br />
<br />
The kitchen was always open and the laundry was constantly running. I said goodbyes to all the kids at once. My heart is full. This was our grandson's first visit, first plane ride. First Christmas together for now seven of us!<br />

Those of you who are interested in the quilt along, I have received and read every single comment. I hope you are patient. I will come back with quilt # one next week.<br />
<br />
A lot of you have ordered the book or already have it in your home. I hope you have had a chance to go through it.<br />
<br />
Couple of reminders before I end this reminder post - (couldn't help myself) <br />
<br />
This is going to be a stress free experience.<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: yellow;">Those of you who are anonymous, please send me an email so I have your email addresses to send you an invite to post on a community blog.</span><br />
<br />
If you do not have Instagram or a blog? No worries, just have fun. This project is designed to get to know other like-minded people and build a community of quilters who appreciate quirky quilts just like the man who brought them to us.<br />

Have a great rest of the week!<br />

The best thing about moving to the San Francisco Bay Area has been coming in contact with quilters, authors, historians and collectors all at the same time.<br />
<br />
Back in 2015 when I still lived in PA, we were invited to the wedding in San Francisco. My book had just been released in December 2014 and just couple of months before that, one of my favorite books was also released - Unconventional and Unexpected Quilts by <a href="http://www.roderickkiracofe.com/main">Roderick Kiracofe</a><br />
<br />
As soon as I got my copy of the book, I realized there was not a single quilt I disliked. I really wanted to meet this guy who collected old, unconventional quilts as art! So when the tickets were booked, I sent Roderick Kiracofe an email wondering if we could meet for coffee. I was honored that he carved some time out of his schedule. <br />
<br />
I took my book with me to get it autographed. When we met and I asked him for his autograph, he said humbly, "I am a quilt collector but people are treating me like some kind of celebrity!"<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">He is a celebrity to me. He has an eye for collecting quilts that have inspired us all. Wouldn't you agree?</span></div>
<br />
So that brings me to this exciting news!<br />
<br />
Last month I attended his exhibit <a href="http://www.roderickkiracofe.com/newsarchive/2018/11/13/0w6d5o89ep71a0nc30obh1fkjtg2we">RED</a> in Berkeley. Common theme - In each quilt, color red used in unique way. It was wonderful to see some of his quilts in person for the first time and hear him talk about each one of them.<br />
Clock on the link to view some of those quilts.<br />
<br />

<br />
I had always wanted to try my hand at using his quilts as inspiration and make quilts of my own. In fact when I flipped through the pages of his book when it was released, Couple of quilts in the book reminded me of my quilts from - Cultural Fusion Quilts. I posted about it <a href="https://therootconnection.blogspot.com/2014/09/unconventional-and-unexpected-american.html">here</a>. <br />

<br />
Here comes the best part! After seeing RED I got excited all over again to make quilts. Kind of quilts that have nothing to do with my book. I have been teaching for past four years and another year is booked with fantastic places to go and things to do. I have had an exciting times these but I am also craving to make new quilts.<br />
<br />
As soon as I thought of making quilts inspired from U&U, I thought to involve my blogging friends.<br />
<br />
I do want to emphasize, I have no other interest than just to make some quilts from this book and inspire quilters out there. <br />
<br />
Are you interested? There is only one rule for this quilt-along.<br />
<br />
All you need to have is the book. You can find a signed copy <a href="http://www.roderickkiracofe.com/shop-books/">here</a>. It would make a great Christmas gift to yourself. I kid you not!<br />
<br />
Here are some "No Rules" of this U&U Quilt-Along<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>They <u>do not</u> need to be wonky if you like to stitch in the straight line. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>There are <u>no</u> deadlines.</li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>I will be sharing some loose directions but you <u>Do Not</u> need to follow my guidelines. You are more than encouraged to go your own way. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Remember that possibilities are endless and you<u> Do Not</u> need to repeat the colors or pattern exactly like it is in the book. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>When you post the progress pictures as well as finished quilts on Instagram, use #U&UQA </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The U&U quilt along will begin 7 January 2019.</span></div>
<br />
What do you say?<br />
Leave a comment and let me know if you are interested.<br />
I will invite you to join Basket Full of Scraps blog. <br />
<br />
Mean while I am going to figure out how to make the blog button for U&UQA<br />
<br />
Leaving you with some images of quilts from RED<br />

<br />
Last November, as soon as Gautam and Kim shared the news of their pregnancy, my mind started thinking of a baby quilt.<br />
<br />
Will it be for a boy or a girl? What pattern will I choose? What theme would they choose for their baby's room?<br />
<br />
All I knew, I wanted this quilt to be very special. I wanted this quilt to be an heirloom. It was going to be hand quilted. It had to be soft and cozy for mother and child. Yes, I wanted it to be big enough so both parents can use it and snuggle in with baby. The baby would be able to use the quilt for couple of years before growing out.<br />
<br />
I went straight to work, looked for any and all of my husband's shirts I could find in my stash. All I could find were white-ish shirts. My husband wears very few colors. The fabrics had to come from washed and worn old clothing. It was very common in India to make baby quilts from used clothing lined with used clothing so they are washable. As I was collecting his shirt, I thought - Why not add grandpa Thomas's shirts too? I got on the phone and requested few of his shirts for the mix.<br />
<br />
Before leaving for India in January, I had everything I needed to make a quilt, except for accent colors. During the first half of 2018, I was also quite busy traveling and teaching. The quilt had to wait. I had a window of later half of May and entire June to make a baby quilt. How difficult can that be? I deconstructed the shirts and left them in a box.<br />
<br />
Time passed quickly, month of May rolled in, the fabrics were still in the tub! In the beginning of the month, I had to travel again for three different workshops and couple of presentations in Seattle area.<br />
That's when I panicked.<br />
<br />
The best thing happened when I was in Seattle. My son asked me if I could fix one of his ripped shirts. I looked at the shirt with a L shaped whole at least 2" long. Oh darn!<br />
In past I had asked Kim to save all Gautam's shirts for a quilt. She right away suggested that I should take that shirt home. Although she had no idea I was cooking up a quilt in my head. I happily accepted the offer. I had just hit the jackpot! I got to add a "papa" shirt in the mix!<br />
<br />
When I came back home, all I knew was I was going to use them with bunch of blues. We were having a grandson! Kim wanted fluffy clouds and stars in baby's room with everything else as a clean canvas (not too many colors) because there will be plenty colors with additions of toys, books, and other things once the baby was here.<br />
<h3>
Start of the Process</h3>
On 21st May, I started the process. With time constraint in mind, I thought a simple quilt will be nice. After all that is what I make - Simple quilts. The question was how to fit the clouds and stars theme in my quilt. Did I need to do it? I couldn't see myself making a representational quilt. I heard my daughter's voice in my head. "Make what you like" an advise I often give my own students. It is an often forgotten voice when we make something for someone else.<br />
<br />
I didn't need to worry what they would like. As long as I love making it, the end result will be beautiful and giving that with whole heart was going to be enough.<br />
<br />
So I let loose and trusted that anything I made will be perfect for this little guy.<br />
<br />
Moving on from there was easy. I cut pieces and pieced them together into strips.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijOq_GsdtgAj3u3aXzcebElXjXdKhy4ANrTniGvga8REjjf-eN7tVG5doqysrxYYSNcSjqZvnWr4tqd4WJq4Db9rYwR3m1EaYl6A_45oGayfGwfzJmz9DqmHLBw56lIJJrjeNJ5KygxUNC/s1600/20180521_153737%257E2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijOq_GsdtgAj3u3aXzcebElXjXdKhy4ANrTniGvga8REjjf-eN7tVG5doqysrxYYSNcSjqZvnWr4tqd4WJq4Db9rYwR3m1EaYl6A_45oGayfGwfzJmz9DqmHLBw56lIJJrjeNJ5KygxUNC/s320/20180521_153737%257E2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then arranged them on the design wall in few different ways.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQoQrIGIygXNMhMXm3lEvjHqIADfybrUSFG_zgvjdn-uYZwSSJqrLdympDMwfhUgZkKLuUcDCkIrdLnCs7sH_jPL0_PgVLjXDF3_0XnQ8W1Ji8wnKwtmIx3354GXLv5l5314WuLG3r7UxH/s1600/20180521_175022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQoQrIGIygXNMhMXm3lEvjHqIADfybrUSFG_zgvjdn-uYZwSSJqrLdympDMwfhUgZkKLuUcDCkIrdLnCs7sH_jPL0_PgVLjXDF3_0XnQ8W1Ji8wnKwtmIx3354GXLv5l5314WuLG3r7UxH/s400/20180521_175022.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<span id="goog_106221111"></span><span id="goog_106221112"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
When I arranged the strips in next arrangement, I knew that was the way I wanted to go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyCljYmfS3FdODRxsEP9U2IdkEGZHDVF7OlExJGyv11htudUvkr62nrS3OMk-0vicY8SgeyszwBBEQm2t-VjH8RKWAhBhp-j2roozr261IRTP4b4147P3mylpm5jCbj6uPtsjj2JyMbddd/s1600/20180521_194314.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1371" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyCljYmfS3FdODRxsEP9U2IdkEGZHDVF7OlExJGyv11htudUvkr62nrS3OMk-0vicY8SgeyszwBBEQm2t-VjH8RKWAhBhp-j2roozr261IRTP4b4147P3mylpm5jCbj6uPtsjj2JyMbddd/s320/20180521_194314.jpg" width="274" /></a></div>
<br />
I kept sewing patches into strips. It took few days and the strips were overflowing. Pretty soon I ran out of the design wall. The quilt had to be good lap size so Kim and the baby could cozy up together.<br />
<br />
It took me five weeks to complete the quilt. I took it with me in July before his birth and gifted it to my son and daughter in law. The quilt contains three shirts of grandpa Thomas and many of my husband.<br />
<br />

It was little over a year ago when I wrote <a href="http://therootconnection.blogspot.com/2017/10/good-news-bad-news.html">this post</a> about the good news and the bad news.. My daughter was moving to the bay area and my husband had a new job is San Diego. They both started their new job on the 30th of October. What a year it has been since then!<br />
<br />
I made this quilt soon after we moved to San Francisco in 2015. I am not sure if I ever shared this story but it is a good reminder of how life's events make up the life itself and it is never is a one note song.<br />
<br />
Back in Fall of 2015 soon after we moved, I thought I could do without the sewing machine for a while. I thought there will be plenty to explore in the city while we looked for our new home in the suburbs. I soon realized that I could not do without the sewing machine. I borrowed my friend's machine to see what I could do. There was a Good will store near by, which became my fabric source. I walked to the store and bought myself some fabric.<br />
<br />
Not having any rotary cutting supplies was a non-issue. My friend had given me a kitchen scissors and that was plenty. I was set. I started tearing the strips and made simple blocks without any measurements. They all turned out to be different size. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4PO85HZtLvNiUcyhrkIlTIHyaU_N77ztrTiAwvTba6pJdUuHtpQYV_RgLRB3o99rWSIaeITmgOKmxu21uUSOUQBS0E48t83GWPb3dFERtKeDh0VAka2ZFksxrpzGZ4io2Zd8o-nQC7Z3d/s1600/One+Block+Wonder.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="460" data-original-width="482" height="381" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4PO85HZtLvNiUcyhrkIlTIHyaU_N77ztrTiAwvTba6pJdUuHtpQYV_RgLRB3o99rWSIaeITmgOKmxu21uUSOUQBS0E48t83GWPb3dFERtKeDh0VAka2ZFksxrpzGZ4io2Zd8o-nQC7Z3d/s400/One+Block+Wonder.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
With no design wall, our bed became the place to lay out the blocks. It worked just fine! I first arranged together all the blocks that were roughly similar in size. If they were slightly small I added the strips. Chopping them up was not an option. I really wanted to use up all the fabric and make as large of the quilt I could. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyznQM6e6agZg_yJxHV_naNuEAPmYrp9e0YtxWQ5erxzrXSrl0H52T4x7Zo_bxuOGo9wXEQvs4cBPqqXJkfPXg3SycNjcXzq-UqVGk2j9JMBiKu1bdy1cTHmG0rdmf2Y2HeC1TzFcQHBV3/s1600/20180730_095420_Burst01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyznQM6e6agZg_yJxHV_naNuEAPmYrp9e0YtxWQ5erxzrXSrl0H52T4x7Zo_bxuOGo9wXEQvs4cBPqqXJkfPXg3SycNjcXzq-UqVGk2j9JMBiKu1bdy1cTHmG0rdmf2Y2HeC1TzFcQHBV3/s400/20180730_095420_Burst01.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
Once all the large blocks were arranged and sewn up, I had to fill up the space. There were just enough scraps and strings left to piece few smaller blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHn4WDFbC_v0FDVYRNx_rQxdGLvxlw5tsa6MbIm1rjAOC8fCoZCE0phZoP8CfcpYiFQYBPUrW-3P1-zp8i1gHnxNY7meeS3GPLedsEozHoU8eKeCCx1EQPBU2ilUu-WUd7zg7BWIAG0oP/s1600/20180730_095450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHn4WDFbC_v0FDVYRNx_rQxdGLvxlw5tsa6MbIm1rjAOC8fCoZCE0phZoP8CfcpYiFQYBPUrW-3P1-zp8i1gHnxNY7meeS3GPLedsEozHoU8eKeCCx1EQPBU2ilUu-WUd7zg7BWIAG0oP/s400/20180730_095450.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
The clothes I bought were not all cotton and I am glad that was the case. My focus was on buying prints that were cheerful. The apartment was grey and dull, too modern for my taste, I needed to focus on colors and prints that would make me happy for the time being.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtMLJvWJcEfYjrjlr1_J3OY6dM9UwBDKfhVtYGZKrb3ukv4DwlaGnZ7T60aKQsKz3Ysh0loahAdBybTiB9rME3FVDQ68lcxUf-NyPoZXEAKf5P3R0rf4sNgwla5-UxW-TBg_wMBuPLr_kB/s1600/20180730_095434.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtMLJvWJcEfYjrjlr1_J3OY6dM9UwBDKfhVtYGZKrb3ukv4DwlaGnZ7T60aKQsKz3Ysh0loahAdBybTiB9rME3FVDQ68lcxUf-NyPoZXEAKf5P3R0rf4sNgwla5-UxW-TBg_wMBuPLr_kB/s400/20180730_095434.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
I used every bit of leftover fabric to sew a skinny border all around the quilt top. I figured some day will turn this quilt into a summer quilt and the time has come!<br />
<br />
It is time to stitch the next chapter of our lives into this quilt. <br />
<br />
I am thrilled to say my husband starts a new job in the bay area next week and coming home in couple of days. <br />
<br />
There have been many ups and down in last couple of years with him loosing his original job, searching for a new one and subsequently moving away from home. We both had decided to hang tight for a year and see how that job would go before moving permanently to San Diego. We all know, nothing is permanent in life but it has been challenging to say the least.<br />
<br />
My days and life's events have been as different as these blocks. Life's experiences - good, bad and ugly - they all add up. I've always believed I am here because of the roads I have traveled and these past few years are no exceptions.<br />
<br />
He comes home in two days!<br />
<br />
I am happy to be here, waiting. <br />

<br />
I am no psychiatrist but this much I know from my own experiences - Sometimes it takes new but just the same event of the past to trigger an old memory. <br />
<br />
I have always been sensitive to sudden loud noises. I also believe it has amplified as the years have gone by. There has to be a reason that makes me startle. I am sure it must be a normal reaction across the board. Sudden noises aren't fun.<br />
<br />
But this morning what happened took me back to 1986. Yes, I know, we are talking about ancient times.<br />
<br />
My husband and I had just moved into our new apartment in Ithaca, NY. I had joined him after one year of our marriage. I could have come with him soon after the wedding (visa situation was quite different then) but I had to finish my last year of Applied Arts back home.<br />
<br />
The apartment we lived in was backed up to lush green hillside and a beautiful Ithaca falls was just a walking distance away. My friend Laurie Buck knows how much I still love that place.<br />
<br />
One fine afternoon, I was making an Indian meal because that was the only thing I knew how to cook. The kitchen was furnished with electric stove which was new to me. I had never worked in a kitchen without a window, or on an electric stove. <br />
<br />
It was 32 years ago! All I remember, I wanted to make Chapatti - Indian flat bread. Back home I used a gas stove and used to roast freshly rolled chapatti straight on the flame. Rolled chapatti rises like a ball, the house smells so good, it makes me hungry just thinking about it right now. If you have ever tried it, you know what I am talking about.<br />
<br />
Here is the link to my <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BL9UR1uA9fA/?taken-by=therootconnection">IG post</a> about it. You will be amused, I promise!<br />
<br />
Well, back in 1986 in Ithaca, I did not have that little cake cooling rack you see there. I thought (or didn't think at all) it would be okay to roast it straight on the coil.<br />
<br />
You have to imagine what happened next. My perfectly rolled chapatti burnt into nothing and the smoke alarm went off. This is the first time ever in my life I heard that loud screeching noise of an alarm. I didn't know what it was and where it was coming from. Honestly, I didn't care, all I knew, I wanted to be as far as possible from it. I turned off the stove and ran outside as fast as possible. <br />
<br />
Everything else about that day has faded away. I do not remember how long I stayed outside. There were no phone calls to be made. I wasn't going to run back in the apartment to call my husband. No cell pones. Hard to imagine that today. <br />
<br />
32 years have gone by since then. I am a pro now! I have managed to trigger the alarm a few times. I still panic when I am in a windowless kitchen. Back home, kitchens always have a window, and it is always open.<br />
<br />
When we moved to San Francisco in 2015, initially we stayed in a beautiful but small apartment. I did not want to cook there at all for the same reason, fear of alarms. It took me a while before I got comfortable to cook there. One day when <u>I wasn't cooking</u> the smoke alarm went off. Aaaarg! Here we go again, I thought. I ran outside the apartment as I was supposed to. Came back once it was cleared.. And then it went on and on again for next few times. I was told I could stay in the apartment because it was the maintenance day for the smoke alarms for the complex and it will go on for most of the day. Can you imagine that?<br />
<br />
So let's fast forward to this morning!<br />
<br />
I am in our apartment in San Diego for couple of weeks. The light is beautiful here and I don't have so much of white, blank space in my house in the bay area. So I decided to take advantage of it all and take pictures of few quilts cascading from the door.<br />
<br />
As soon as I took one picture, the alarm went off. Ha Ha!<br />
<br />
My quilts are too hot for this place!<br />
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp_OPJqwTgZxN9tvPW2jBj2MvftVPbNpvqUdCz4ypIYxWzCGyThngUyuigiB2gBrfTb9hvsxVPxxvDuCq6c45VQ6jmsrOln7E7mYNJ3hOfr-_-Nd_V0WLn2ugll7HUNQvQ9w6OZnGq-T9_/s1600/20180725_080616.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp_OPJqwTgZxN9tvPW2jBj2MvftVPbNpvqUdCz4ypIYxWzCGyThngUyuigiB2gBrfTb9hvsxVPxxvDuCq6c45VQ6jmsrOln7E7mYNJ3hOfr-_-Nd_V0WLn2ugll7HUNQvQ9w6OZnGq-T9_/s640/20180725_080616.jpg" width="360" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Quilts too hot that turned on the smoke alarm 2018</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I was still in my pajamas but decent enough to not worry about it all, I grabbed my phone, keys and wallet.. You never know how long it would take for everything to be normal. As I was walking down, I realized, this is it! This is why I get startled with loud sudden noises.<br />
<br />
After all I am a girl from India, where noises are common. Those of you who have been there, you know this. I am quite used to daily sounds - The honking of automobiles, people talking loud, all kinds of processions on the streets, wedding and religious, even marches and protests of all kinds. Nothing new there. If fact, when I came back after every visit, the quiet here was unbearable. But the smoke alarm is a different kind of beast. I have never gotten used to it.<br />
<br />
But I understand, I have changed. It has been 32 years. It would be strange if I hadn't.<br />
<br />
Got to love the apartment life!<br />

<br />
<br />
I am almost done with that other quilt I shared in previous post. I am going to have to wait to bind it until I get home again.<br />
<br />
I basted two quilts before leaving for San Diego. Small quilts don't really take that long to quilt, especially when you have lot of time on your hands.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2PKwd_xy3lsi6f2lD-o8B8BIMqtPfa6Px2OtKEKBViZbTgmizaI00lLPWIM6Iqmwzyp9QYCv7JQe1hoBFUU2kARr5dRmixr6xuJ0HuVBcMJVJsdhtuLhg44UnKQj0e1acUP9GEHLl6R9-/s1600/20180723_173631_Signature_Signature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1063" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2PKwd_xy3lsi6f2lD-o8B8BIMqtPfa6Px2OtKEKBViZbTgmizaI00lLPWIM6Iqmwzyp9QYCv7JQe1hoBFUU2kARr5dRmixr6xuJ0HuVBcMJVJsdhtuLhg44UnKQj0e1acUP9GEHLl6R9-/s640/20180723_173631_Signature_Signature.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I am really glad these are small quilts too. After moving to California, I have missed seeing my quilts on the walls. This door in our apartment has become quite the feature lately. I have taken pictures of different quilts. You may have seen a couple of them on instagram. The light is always perfect here!<br />
I will have to bring this quilt back here in the apartment once it is bound and labeled.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSy9wZNts2kiyQoBY6GfAw5Xw7CdwvY6qOOtC4q-F3Td-x4JRL6Ds0ZLktaWQfqiwPV8D-igBP0_WdBeH-XNU9fOZN6WPp0t_WKHAgoRLKjNTKStrnEgXB8r8bT7yfJC1H9BWNlLvOs5JQ/s1600/20180723_173446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSy9wZNts2kiyQoBY6GfAw5Xw7CdwvY6qOOtC4q-F3Td-x4JRL6Ds0ZLktaWQfqiwPV8D-igBP0_WdBeH-XNU9fOZN6WPp0t_WKHAgoRLKjNTKStrnEgXB8r8bT7yfJC1H9BWNlLvOs5JQ/s640/20180723_173446.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Once I started quilting, it progressed organically. It started to look like steam rising on a hot day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV9WDKFBWh6q2L6UIo8FLUCp4BK6eqaV2-BsWiU484M_TNXB_ko7-6Ab4pKq0_5Qt-alcPoKbLDapYsZN4IAQ2ww9vAYF5ZZEo0x-rzO73FAN7uR1iCCSxNq4uNp-tz-P9NH_uRQ8dIjag/s1600/20180723_173455_Signature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV9WDKFBWh6q2L6UIo8FLUCp4BK6eqaV2-BsWiU484M_TNXB_ko7-6Ab4pKq0_5Qt-alcPoKbLDapYsZN4IAQ2ww9vAYF5ZZEo0x-rzO73FAN7uR1iCCSxNq4uNp-tz-P9NH_uRQ8dIjag/s640/20180723_173455_Signature.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I decided to change it up a bit and stitched with red thread. Quilts made with used clothing are so soft, the needle runs through it like butter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhywq9riBEqBwSguhniZ12G9lWdiQqdDvOpq_quWqrU_OGAazntkHrvONVGdcT7RjKG0TpEG2CjurdpiCH8E85M9_l-soLoEPAgI6R4JTvgbkkgUSa4lt5m5praGhtgQWNXoMad92nkav8z/s1600/20180723_173440_Signature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhywq9riBEqBwSguhniZ12G9lWdiQqdDvOpq_quWqrU_OGAazntkHrvONVGdcT7RjKG0TpEG2CjurdpiCH8E85M9_l-soLoEPAgI6R4JTvgbkkgUSa4lt5m5praGhtgQWNXoMad92nkav8z/s640/20180723_173440_Signature.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<br />
You never know what tomorrow might bring. I may add few more stitches to it to I will start on the second quilt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRAGWobdmaDfu07JyJ8iG9ip2L-4NQcl1a_wDSjpfiQfSQGeo9RdViJv2aBF-Ve8pRh74S2HyXeOMUu2MVK1LFTcHUDDNE8zOyjA7-r8kFsqrIv81URveABz4xcFxAuev35MjrE5kj-Cbw/s1600/20180723_173712_Signature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1175" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRAGWobdmaDfu07JyJ8iG9ip2L-4NQcl1a_wDSjpfiQfSQGeo9RdViJv2aBF-Ve8pRh74S2HyXeOMUu2MVK1LFTcHUDDNE8zOyjA7-r8kFsqrIv81URveABz4xcFxAuev35MjrE5kj-Cbw/s640/20180723_173712_Signature.jpg" width="468" /></a></div>
<br />
This second quilt is made of an old shirt, a dress and few scraps of my husband's shirt.<br />
<br />
Both these quilts were made at the same time. I can call them twins. Funny how they got basted at the same time and on the same backing too!<br />
<br />
When I have smaller quilts, I layer them together. It makes it easier to quilt on the edges without having to use larger piece of batting or backing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw96EoIsVZBkKp70eZ8Yce46RuFyzz-uGvN0j7JwfPGq87CAxivGRC71hK8umGCFsN2GLTsz5z_0SNZMKwM27My0qO0oih6Zwe2sx9HQy8U_g8JCGXdBW7HeDYW18Pr4CS5lFPBxyaEt3j/s1600/20180716_162029%257E2_Signature.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="999" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw96EoIsVZBkKp70eZ8Yce46RuFyzz-uGvN0j7JwfPGq87CAxivGRC71hK8umGCFsN2GLTsz5z_0SNZMKwM27My0qO0oih6Zwe2sx9HQy8U_g8JCGXdBW7HeDYW18Pr4CS5lFPBxyaEt3j/s640/20180716_162029%257E2_Signature.jpg" width="396" /></a></div>
<br />
Do you ever do that?<br />
<br />
