Moving along with Painted Zigzag

Last week I pieced the back for my zigzag quilt. Read about it here how it all started. It makes me happy when I piece a back for such a large quilt because that means I have reduced a chunk of my old fabrics.

This quilt was almost entirely made with used clothing from the Goodwill Store. Women's skirts, shirts, children's clothing and aprons, scrubs everything went. I had taken a challenge for myself to make something from recognizable fabrics. The fabric content include all cotton to polyester, rayon and cotton blends.
This is what I came up with. It may not be perfect by today's quilting standard for some but I love it.

Click on the picture on the side bar and you will find the loosely written instructions for the quilt.

I spent most of my evening wondering whether to machine quilt or by hand but finally resorted to machine quilting. It is going to be another challenge for me. It is a queen size quilt with busy prints.. My eyes are going to pop out by the time I am done with it.

Wish me luck! I am going to need it.

  1. Queen size quilts are a bear to quilt. You will be happy when it's done, beautiful colors!

  2. Despite its size, I think this is a perfect piece to machine quilt (though my shoulders ache just thinking about it!). Those busy prints and its simple pattern will mask any early missteps or wobbles (you mentioned on FB that this will be good practice). By the time it's finished, you'll be an expert. And have a wonderful quilt to use!

  3. Such a joyful quilt and so amazing that a lot of the fabrics are now going to have a 'second life' as part of your quilt.

  8. I made this quilt! I loved the pictures of yours so much, and I'd won FQ pack of Art Gallery fabrics that I wanted to use right way, so I bought more and made this, in a lap size. I love it, almost as much as your scrappy one. I used metallic thread to quilt it; even busier! I put the metallic thread in the bobbin, and quilted from the back, roughly outlining the large-scale floral print on the backing. Not bad for a newbie quilter, I say!

  13. I love quilts made with old garments - we seem to be so quick to want to buy fabric these days when we can create ones that are just as wonderful as yours! I think it's a greater a creative challenge to make them 'work' together, rather buying co-ordinating lines - and it gets a bit tedious seeing the same prints coming up time and time again! Look forward to seeing how the quilting goes - a mammoth task, so yes, lots of luck to you!
