Kawandi – Word for a Siddi Quilt

Stories in Stitches

Join me for a transformative quilting retreat as we delve into the rich history and cultural significance of Kawandi. Originating from the African diaspora of India, Kawandi are steeped in tradition and serve as a canvas for personal expression. Under my expert guidance, you will explore the meditative art of stitching, learning traditional techniques to craft their own unique Kawandi. Drawing from my daily practice of stitching to capture thoughts and memories in real-time, I will lead you in weaving together your personal narrative using basic sewing essentials.

In addition to creating your own Kawandi, you will have the opportunity to design a fabric collage inspired by Kawandi techniques, further expanding your creative horizons. Whether you are a seasoned quilter or a beginner, this retreat promises a journey of self-expression and artistic exploration.

Workshop supplies are not included in the fees however, Sujata will supply a kit which will include a spool of thread, needles. Making a Kawandi is a personal experience,  participants are encouraged to bring meaningful fabrics and scraps to use in their own projects.

Please note that the class size is limited to 15 participants.

You will also have one free day to explore Pau with its historic C16th Chateaux, Place Royale & the Boulevard des Pyrénées. You may wish to extend your trip before or after the workshop to discover the Atlantic coast (approximately 1.30 hours drive) or even the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain (approximately 3 hours drive). Please note transport is not included on the free day. However, The Team at Clos Mirabel are happy to provide suggestions and help with logistics.
