A new quilt with Bright Heart by Amy Butler and a Giveaway!

This Giveaway is Now Closed!

The first time I ever used fabrics by Amy Butler was back in 2005. I wasn't so much into buying fabrics and definitely not aware of designers and manufacturers. I would see fabrics I like, buy in minimum yardage allowed by the fabric shops and mix them with my own stash (which was also minimal) at home.

Few months after my Houston trip, Amy and I decided to do a little collaboration. I offered to make a quilt with her fabrics. When Bright Heart collection arrived in the mail, I was excited to show how floral prints would work with free-form blocks. I chose ''Lattice'' pattern from my book so the quilt would look like a view outside my windows during summer months. I decided to also add a few shot cottons to create the background for prints to spark.

Amy's Bright Heart Collection inspired by her visit to Mexico and people she connected with. Name of her fabric line pretty much describes her as I know her. Bright at heart and grounded.

Here is the quilt made with Bright Heart Quilting Cotton - Cap One ''grounded''

Outlining the lattice and filling in the background with simple stippling was a way to go for this quilt.

It allowed me to create enough texture and dimensions to the quilt and gave it see through effect.

Most of the fabrics in this colorway were medium tone, I wanted to keep the quilt as soft as possible so instead of adding darker solids I went with light and medium tones of shot cottons.

First time I ever used Amy Butler's fabrics was for my Wagon Wheel quilt. Although the whole quilt was not exclusively made with her fabrics, they gave me a great start. One of my first ''not so straight'' quilt was made using Denise Schmidt's Flea Market Fancy. It was made with wonky squares and few tiny triangles tossed all over the quilt. I called that pattern Box of Candies. I think that quilt gives a nice contrast to Amy's lush fabrics.

Here is some photo fun!

August is my birthday month. I would like to end this month on a happy note by giving away a copy of my book Cultural Fusion Quilts. If you win it you can not only make the Lattice Quilt but 14 other fun, free-form quilts from the book!

  2. Just gorgeous color quilts. I could wring them out with such juicy colors. Did you not use all the blocks for the lattice quilt? I was trying to figure out what you did and could not find any magenta blocks like the lattice insides. I wish I could combine colors like you. I don't know where to start to get such a gorgeous mixture. Love the Wagon wheel quilt. I bought the pattern from you, but it is still in the wrapper!

  3. I love Amy Butler fabrics, the rich colors, the patterns. I own a couple of pieces I have yet to cut into. I love your style and the richness of your quilts. I will eventually make every quilt in your book. I missed your trip to St. Louis and hope you will plan to visit again.

The quilt design decision.... to make the lattice quilt to represent a summertime view outside you windows. I luv the colorful quilt.

  4. Ohh. Your quilt is beautiful. I have an Amy Butter layer cake and a few fat quarters, and I haven't figured out what to do with them yet. I would love to make a quilt like this. I like the design decision you made about the quilting. Stippling in the background to give dimension to the lattice gives this quilt such a rich surface! I like Cap 1. Thanks for sharing this, and for the chance to win your beautiful book!

  6. This is such a brilliant quilt, both the design and these fabrics by Amy Butler. You manage (again and again) to create sparks of inspiration for me like no one else! That is such a gift, so thank you for your generous openness. My daughter was a fibers minor when she introduced me to Amy Butler a few years ago. I have your Cultural Fusion book (LOVE it and go to it often) but would love to win a signed copy and give my current one away. :)

Your wagon wheel quilt is SOOOO beautiful!
I have made a similar quilt in bright oranges, very scrappy, but yours inspires me to try a softer version!
I already have your book, but if I win and autographed copy, I will donate my current copy to our guild's library!

  12. Sujata, the quilt is truly lovely. How could it not be with you as the creator?! :-) One of your design decisions was to add light colored shot cottons as some of the backgrounds to allow the prints to "spark". I feel that your adding those particular shades rounded out the palette and made the overall quilt more you. very inspiring!

  14. Gorgeous quilt! I think using Amy Butler's fabric for the lattice quilt is a beautiful combination. I like the shot cottons in different colors. Just gorgeous! Amy Butler's fabrics are one of the reasons I got interested in learning to sew. Around 2004 I had my first baby and got a sewing machine for Christmas. I'd never even seen a sewing machine up close and I was nearly 30. It was a tenuous time learning how to wind the bobbin. I didn't sew much those first few years (hardly at all) but by 2009 I stayed home full time and never looked back. Kids and quilts are my life!

I checked out Amy Butler's fabrics and the inspired palette is my favorite. I already have your book and have gifted it once and convinced two friends to buy it but I'm sure I could find a home for one more copy:)

  30. Happy Birthday! This quilt is beautiful - I think this is the nicest of the 3 colourways, and it goes really well with the shot cottons you have used for the lattice. I like that you have stuck with the light and medium tones for a really soft, pretty overall effect.
