Paper Beads and Simply Moderne #10 Giveaway

This is a scenario, I know we all have gone through.

You have worked on numerous quilts and are left with all sorts of scraps. Your baskets and bins are spilling over and no matter what you do to organize them, they seem to overflow. Sometimes literally follow you wherever in your quilty life you go.

Those strings and scraps..

Is it worth saving them?

Do you ever want to see THAT piece of fabric ever again after having used in more than three quilts?

Have you ever asked that question to yourself?

What do you do with those, now ugly and old to you scraps? Do you give them away or do you save them?

I don't think anyone wants bits and pieces of my scraps so I piece them together in hopes of some day making a scrap quilt.

Paper Beads started out something like that. Tons of ugly scraps overflowing the scrap baskets, finally saw the light of day and graced the cover of a beautiful magazine!

There are so many inspiring string quilts out there but I wanted to make mine just a little different.

I made blocks in all different sizes. It's easier when you have no end result in mind. Then came the designing stage. How was I going to use my string blocks into a quilt?

During that time I had bought a necklace made out of magazine paper by women in Africa. Bowls and baskets made from magazine papers were in almost every home stores. I was not only intrigued by the texture and shapes of those beads but also the idea that they were made with recycled material.

It made sense to try my hand at that. Except, mine were going to be made from fabrics.

For the background, I used a brown Indian shot cotton purchased on my trip to India. Those beads jump right off of it, don't you think?

Couple of years back I was approached by Quiltmania Editions to submit a quilt or two for Simply Moderne magazine. Paper Beads made the cut!

When I worked at the quilt shop, Quiltmania was one of my favorite magazines and it is an honor to see my quilt on the cover of its sister magazine.

I am excited to share this news. Now you can put all your scraps and strings to a good use and make this quilt too!

Quiltmania editions is giving away a copy of Simply Moderne to one lucky winner from my instagram feed!

I improvised my quilt as it progressed but you can make this quilt with the instructions provided by the magazine.

To win a copy of the Simply Moderne #10, all you have to do is subscribe to this blog and follow me on Instagram @therootconnection

I will pick a winner on Monday, October 8th.

Good luck!

Winner of Cultural Fusion Quilts and Update on Lyme

My plan was to draw a winning number last night at midnight but time slipped away.

Since I am over half a day late, without further due...

The winner of my book Cultural Fusion Quilts is PK Sews.

Here is what she said.

''Ohh. Your quilt is beautiful. I have an Amy Butter layer cake and a few fat quarters, and I haven't figured out what to do with them yet. I would love to make a quilt like this. I like the design decision you made about the quilting. Stippling in the background to give dimension to the lattice gives this quilt such a rich surface! I like Cap 1. Thanks for sharing this, and for the chance to win your beautiful book!''

Congratulations PK Sews!!!
Please send me an email with your address so I can send you a signed copy of my book.

Now the second good news!
My tests results came clear of Lyme infection. It has been long couple of months. I am relieved beyond explanation.

Thank you all for your sending good thoughts and wishes.

Happy Sewing!

A new quilt with Bright Heart by Amy Butler and a Giveaway!

This Giveaway is Now Closed!

The first time I ever used fabrics by Amy Butler was back in 2005. I wasn't so much into buying fabrics and definitely not aware of designers and manufacturers. I would see fabrics I like, buy in minimum yardage allowed by the fabric shops and mix them with my own stash (which was also minimal) at home.

Few months after my Houston trip, Amy and I decided to do a little collaboration. I offered to make a quilt with her fabrics. When Bright Heart collection arrived in the mail, I was excited to show how floral prints would work with free-form blocks. I chose ''Lattice'' pattern from my book so the quilt would look like a view outside my windows during summer months. I decided to also add a few shot cottons to create the background for prints to spark.

Amy's Bright Heart Collection inspired by her visit to Mexico and people she connected with. Name of her fabric line pretty much describes her as I know her. Bright at heart and grounded.

Here is the quilt made with Bright Heart Quilting Cotton - Cap One ''grounded''

Outlining the lattice and filling in the background with simple stippling was a way to go for this quilt.

It allowed me to create enough texture and dimensions to the quilt and gave it see through effect.

Most of the fabrics in this colorway were medium tone, I wanted to keep the quilt as soft as possible so instead of adding darker solids I went with light and medium tones of shot cottons.

First time I ever used Amy Butler's fabrics was for my Wagon Wheel quilt. Although the whole quilt was not exclusively made with her fabrics, they gave me a great start. One of my first ''not so straight'' quilt was made using Denise Schmidt's Flea Market Fancy. It was made with wonky squares and few tiny triangles tossed all over the quilt. I called that pattern Box of Candies. I think that quilt gives a nice contrast to Amy's lush fabrics.

Here is some photo fun!

August is my birthday month. I would like to end this month on a happy note by giving away a copy of my book Cultural Fusion Quilts. If you win it you can not only make the Lattice Quilt but 14 other fun, free-form quilts from the book!

All you have to do is tell a friend about the giveaway and leave a comment after you visit Amy Butler's website.

Answer one of the following questions.
What was one of the designing decisions for this quilt?
Which one is your favorite Cap from Bright Heart Collection?

I will ship a signed copy anywhere in the world so everyone is welcome to enter. If you already have my book (I hope you do!) I am sure your sister or a friend would love a copy!

If you haven't heard of my book... WHAT??? Well then, grab a cup of tea and spend some time here, you have a lot to catch up!

I will announce a winner next Monday. Make sure I have your email I can't reach you if you are a no-reply blogger!

Please send me your snail mail address so I can mail you the copy if the book "Quilt Fiesta".

Thank you all for participating in Cheryl's Giveaway.

Quilt Fiesta book giveaway!

Surprising designs from Mexican tiles.

I was honored when Cheryl Lynch asked me to be included in her blog tour and a book give away.

One of you lucky readers can win a signed copy of her book!

'Quilt Fiesta' includes 10 different projects inspired from the ceramic tiles from Mexico.

Cheryl has cleverly combined pieced blocks and easy applique designs that create secondary patterns seen in tile work.

The book also has design options in the library of center and corner designs that will keep your own creative juices flowing.
There are simple instructions and guidelines on how to create a unique quilt by mixing these patterns.

Each quilt pattern has two different versions which makes it exciting and lets you be imaginative to see beyond the original quilts. (In my mind it is always a great thing!)

I love the fact that it also includes a chapter, From Inspiration to Design
a very informative guide on creating a quilt from your own inspirations!

Isn't that wonderful?

I am certainly going to give this a try!

Last year I had taken above photos of tile work at my grandmother's place when I visited India.
Don't you think this pattern would make a wonderful quilt?

Are you inspired?

Leave a comment to win a signed copy of Quilt Fiesta!
If you are a no-reply blogger, make sure to send me your email address.
I will announce the lucky winner on March 6th!
Good Luck!

The fun doesn't stop here!
There are two more days of giveaway left.

Next stop,

Good Luck!
